Gymnasts who wish to be competitive, but not elite/ collegiate will find that the optimum starting time is between the ages of 6 and 10. Based on the time it takes to master the skills and the requirements set by the USAG, a gymnast aged 5- 7 will usually be in level 1 or level 2. In some cases, a 7 year old could reach the start of level 3. Each child is different and learns at a different pace, so this is a generalization.
